Mercedes’ preparations for the new season received a big shot in the arm at Barcelona on Friday as Michael Schumacher took their W02 – running in a more definitive Australia-spec for the first time – to by far the fastest time seen at the circuit this winter.
On what was the final day of pre-season testing for some teams including perceived pacesetters Red Bull, Schumacher stormed to the top of the times with a 1m21.268s during a mid-morning qualifying simulation as he got to grips with a car which had had further updates bolted onto overnight.
This lap was good enough to see him end the day 0.346s faster than Fernando Alonso, whose Ferrari team even described Schumacher’s effort as “impressive” in a lunchtime update.
