Formula 1 teams will begin final on-track preparations for the rescheduled season-opener in Australia on March 27 at Barcelona on Tuesday, when the crucial final test of pre-season gets underway.
The changes made to the testing and race schedule following Bahrain’s decision to call off its March events in wake of civil unrest in the country have resulted in a brief lull in on-track action over the past fortnight, but that will end on Tuesday morning when just over half of the grid’s 12 teams take to the Circuit de Catalunya for the second time this winter.
Although all squads again only have maximum of four days in which to test their cars, the Barcelona test itself will stretch to five days as some teams opt to start on Wednesday and finish on Saturday.
World champions and perceived winter pacesetters Red Bull get their RB7 up-and-running again on the first day, with Mark Webber and team-mate Sebastian Vettel alternating in the car until Friday.
McLaren’s drivers admitted last week that the team’s MP4-26 was not yet as competitive or reliable as it needed to be so therefore the final test is a particularly important one for the Woking squad.
Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will drive one day apiece on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, before the team skips Thursday’s running altogether before returning on the final two days.

Mercedes’ preparations for the new season received a big shot in the arm at Barcelona on Friday as Michael Schumacher took their W02 – running in a more definitive Australia-spec for the first time – to by far the fastest time seen at the circuit this winter.
On what was the final day of pre-season testing for some teams including perceived pacesetters Red Bull, Schumacher stormed to the top of the times with a 1m21.268s during a mid-morning qualifying simulation as he got to grips with a car which had had further updates bolted onto overnight.
This lap was good enough to see him end the day 0.346s faster than Fernando Alonso, whose Ferrari team even described Schumacher’s effort as “impressive” in a lunchtime update.
