Group Lotus has announced a new partnership with the Renault team, that will see the Renault car company scale back its Formula 1 involvement to engine supply deals, and also ramps up the controversy over the use of the Lotus brand in the world championship.
As rumoured for several weeks, car company Group Lotus has become a major shareholder in the Enstone squad alongside Genii Capital, which bought the majority of the team from Renault last winter, and become title sponsor in a deal that will run until at least 2017.
Renault has sold its share to Genii, but will stay on as an engine supplier to the team, which will be known as Lotus Renault GP.
Team chairman and Genii head Gerard Lopez said the deal ensured a bright future for his outfit.

Virgin Racing has signed Jerome D’Ambrosio to partner Timo Glock in its 2011 race line-up, the team announced on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Belgian will replace Brazilian Lucas di Grassi after impressing the team with his speed and technical feedback on his four Friday practice outings in 2010 and at the post-season young driver test in Abu Dhabi.
“Jerome had been on our radar for quite some time as a driver we should seriously consider for a 2011 race seat,” said Virgin team principal John Booth.
“We had followed his progress in GP2 closely and it was clear he was ‘one to watch’, but when we put him in the car for the four race weekends and the Abu Dhabi test he surpassed even our own expectations.
“He slotted into the team perfectly and everyone took a shine to him, including our partners and the media.
“Apart from his obvious skill at the wheel of a Formula 1 car, he is an immensely personable young guy who is a pleasure to have around.
“He has secured this seat absolutely on merit, and I think coupled with Timo we have the perfect blend of youth, experience, speed and potential and we can’t wait to see what they can achieve together next season.”

Vitaly Petrov will continue driving for Lotus Renault GP for another two seasons after chiefs at the rebranded team gave him a fresh two-year contract.
Petrov, who became the first Russian to compete in Formula 1 at the start of this year, had been made to wait on his future at the team over recent months while his bosses assessed whether he deserved a second season after a mixed rookie campaign.
However the Enstone-based outfit has now decided to keep him alongside team leader Robert Kubica for a further two seasons and its chairman Gerard Lopez – whose Genii investment company now jointly owns the former Renault-owned team with Group Lotus – is convinced Petrov has the talent to deliver more consistent results in 2011.
