FIA president says Williams and Toyota have been "clever"
Concerns that rear diffusers on the new Williams and Toyota cars might be illegal have been rubbished by FIA president Max Mosley.
Renault questioned the legality of diffusers on both the FW31 and TF109 chassis as they incorporate different aerodynamic shaping at the rear of the cars than those of their rivals.
This means that the diffusers both appear to exceed the maximum height of 175 mm.
"They (the diffusers) are certainly interesting, although I don't think I can comment on their legality," Renault's executive director of engineering Pat Symonds said last month.
"That's something for the FIA to comment on. We will be asking the FIA about it, but we haven't yet."
However, according to Mosley, the FIA has decided that both cars are within the new 2009 rules, although he concedes that race stewards may take a "different view".
"It will always happen when you have got new regulations," Mosley told autosport.com
"The current FIA view is that Williams and Toyota have been clever and have exploited the wording of the rules in a clever way.
"But somebody may challenge it and the stewards may take a different view - it could happen.
"The view on our technical people is that it is okay, we will wait and see if someone challenges it."
