Lewis Hamilton set a blistering pace in first practice for the Turkish Grand Prix, lapping nearly a second faster than team-mate Jenson Button in a McLaren one-two.
Mercedes team-mates Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were third and fourth fastest, the seven-time world champion getting the upper hand by 0.1s.
Next came the four Renault-powered cars, with Red Bull duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber fifth and eighth quickest respectively, sandwiched by the Renault R30s of Robert Kubica and rookie Vitaly Petrov.
Ferrari had a low-key start to its 800th world championship grand prix meeting, with Fernando Alonso finishing ninth on the timesheet and Felipe Massa 13th.
