From the BBC website: Michael Schumacher has been penalised for overtaking Ferrari's Fernando Alonso when it was not allowed at the end of the Monaco Grand Prix. The decision adds 20 seconds to the German's race time, demoting him to 12th place and putting Alonso sixth.
Schumacher passed Alonso just as the safety car pulled in at the end of Lap 78. The FIA stewards, which included his old sparring partner Damon Hill, have deemed the German breached Article 40.13 of the Sporting Regulations, which states that “if the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking."
As far as I'm concerned if the SC is still deployed the green racing light should not have been on!!

Yep payback time for Damon springs to mind but hey ho and I will now also Agree with you Susie. The green flag was clearly seen in Brawn's photos. So therefore it should be GO... but Jake and Eddie and DC did discuss that particular rule and DC said it was changed this year. So I guess they need to look at changing that rule back again, or add a bit says yellow flags will be waved and not green ones! Feel sorry for Schumi..I really do....coz it was a good clean overtake and we watching it loved it! fizzy

If I remember right and I'll be watching again - when the SC went in the SC lights on the boards went out they should have been on. This has left me torn being a Ferrari fan yet justice has not been done here. I am in agreement with ya Fizzy it was a great overtaking move and it may have paid off for Schumi, just shows he's still got it - alert to the end as always.

I'm annoyed about this... DC, Eddie and Jake were discussing it and they saw in the replay from Schumacher's car, that Alonso had crossed the "safety car" line and just after Schumacher went over the line, he overtook Alonso!
The 20 second penalty is just pathetic!!!

What a stupid rule - it makes no sense. It was clearly green flag racing and it was a superb overtake by Shumi.
I hope Mercedes win that one

I'm leaning towards shoe on this one...but if the last lap is a safety car lap...does that mean most or all of the lap? To me, the dash SC car warning light, if it went out before the pass, contradicts the rules.
Did the FIA turn the light off before the pass?

A gray area in the regulation whereby FIA needs to review that.

The FIA has confirmed it plans to adjust the wording of the regulations concerning the safety car rules on the final lap of a race following the confusion caused by Michael Schumacher’s pass on Fernando Alonso in Monaco.
Mercedes driver Schumacher was handed a 20s time penalty by race stewards following last Sunday’s race after they judged that by passing the Ferrari he had broken Article 40.13 of the sporting regulations which forbids overtaking if the race finishes behind the safety car.
Mercedes argued that it had every reason to believe the race had been re-started and that Schumacher’s pass for sixth was legitimate, as the safety car had pulled into the pit lane and both race control and track-side marshals had signalled the race was back on.
However, it later announced it wasn’t pushing ahead with its appeal as the FIA had accepted the reasons why it had interpreted the rules in that way and agreed to clarify the regulations with the teams.
On Thursday morning the FIA issued a statement in which acknowledged the regulations, and application of them, needed to be made clearer and said an amendment to the rule book would be put to its World Motor Sport Council for ratification on June 23.
“The problems identified during the final lap of the Monaco Grand Prix, counting for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, showed a lack of clarity in the application of the rule prohibiting overtaking behind the Safety Car,” the governing body said.
“Adjustments to the regulations are necessary to clarify the procedure that cars must meet when the last lap is controlled by the Safety Car whilst also ensuring that the signaling for teams and drivers is made more clear.
“These adjustments will help to avoid the problem which occurred during the Monaco Grand Prix from happening in the future.

If they agree that the rules were unclear and need re-writing, then they should drop the penalty.
