Related photos / videos Toyota to recall 45,000 cars in UK The owners of the cars, all 2006 and 2007 Yaris models, will receive letters telling them about the problem, a Toyota UK spokesman said.
He said a seat belt pre-tensioner, a safety measure which locks a seat belt in place during a collision, could heat up and cause a fire in a high speed head-on crash.
There have not been any reported cases of this actually happening.
He said: "We can use chassis numbers to identify the cars involved and then trace the owners through the DVLA to ensure the right people are sent letters."
A total of 1.3 million vehicles are being recalled worldwide
