After some additional thought, here is my perspective. We can't compare the FIA/FOTA split to IRL/CART split. CART struggled not only because they couldn't run at Indy, but other factors. They used to run a race on the same day as Indy at Michigan, 180 miles away. There were other weekends where both series ran. With the majority of races in the US and Canada, there was just too many for the fans to see, and hence smaller crowds. They also both became a spec series FOTA will not be a spec series and will be more international. They will have many of the best current teams that already have a big fan base and known drivers. When the IRL first started nobody ever heard of the teams or the drivers. It's hard to root for "Joe Smoe from the Oshkosh team" when nobody knows of them. I'm guessing they will have a few races in North America, maybe one or two in Canada and one or two in the states so they will not over saturate the market. F1 fans in the US soured on the sport after the USGP debacle in 95' They would embrace a new series minus Bernie and Max, whom they feel ruined it in the first place when they abandoned North America. We could also see some interesting venues over here such as Laguna Seca, Watkins Glenn,or Detroit which all held F1 races in the past. I say Bring It On!!!! ;D

They should bring it back to Indy..what a better place to have it :-). I don't recall having a GP in the speedway with less than 100,000 fans.

I had a slight typo...the indy debacle was in 2005 and the california f1 race was actually at long beach, not laguna seca. Laguna is a nicer track though, and other possibilities are mid-ohio and mossport.
When visiting the 06' USGP at Indy, there were 120,000 fans...now they get 30,000 in Turkey and give away free tickets in China. Bernie's marketing plan and empire is crumbling...

IRL and CART fans were mostly american folks. When the F1 circus was in town, we had lots of foreign visitors which was pretty cool. Brazilian, German, Mexican, British, Italian, Aussie, etc. The Brazilian fans were the best; happy partying outrageous people who really had a good time. The Italians fans were very passionate, and the British fans were very knowledgable of the sport, and the Germans were very technical. I really enjoyed hanging out with all of them.
My point is that we need this atmosphere back here. Max and Bernie don't care about NA. If FOTA wants to bring this back to America, it should be a priority. Do what it takes to make it happen.

Of all the developments, perhaps the most significant is the news that several teams who had submitted applications for 2010 are now either cancelling them or siding with FOTA. N Technology are among the most scathing (see below).
If the FIA cannot even keep these teams on side, how can it expect to put a serious list of competitors together for 2010? This, more than any ‘legal advice’ must be the real reason behind their decision not to publish an entry list tomorrow…

This is a grat reply I found with regard to the so called legal binding contracts
What's to stop Ferrari taking part in both series? To avoid any legal action from the FIA and Mad Max, they could send a couple of old bangers along covered in red paint and prancing horses to chug around at the back, while the real deal races in the new series.

How about Montreal, Mosport, and Laguna Seca for the North American leg? 3 totally different tracks- 3 totally different challenges!

Make there own Races. Do it before Mosley can hold them off with ,not enough time to set up these new races. There are plenty of racing tracks that they can run the cars the way that all fans like to see.Welcome 2010 today.Don't put it off.Get rid of Mosley an every other problem in the way of - good racing.

Seabass, I'm with you 100%. I'm thinking that Bernie may have the rights to Montreal...so this could be a technical stumbling block. That's why I'm suggesting alternative sites that are not on the current F1 calender...but are cool locations anyway.

F1: FOTA’s ‘New Formula’ Eyes 17-Race Calendar Written by: SPEED Staff / GMM 06/21/2009 - 08:11 PM Silverstone (GBR) Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone gestures in the paddock of the Silverstone circuit before the British Formula One Grand Prix. (Photo: Getty Images) » More Photos
Rumors that plans for FOTA's breakaway championship are moving forward abounded on Sunday.
In the paddock of the Silverstone circuit, even a possible name for the series emerged - 'New Formula' - as well as a potential 17-race 2010 calendar.
Former F1 venues including Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Jerez, Imola, Montreal, Indianapolis, Silverstone, Magny Cours and Adelaide were listed on the theoretical calendar, published by the German news agency SID.
Current tracks were also mentioned: Monaco, Silverstone, Monza, Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Suzuka, while potential new venues are Jerez, Portimao, the Lausitzring, Surfer's Paradise (Australia) and even the Finnish capital Helsinki.
But while some suggest that F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone is moving towards the rebel team's plans, he told Britain's Daily Star newspaper on Sunday that he fears for the breakaway.
Despite earlier sympathizing with the teams' dislike of the proposed budget cap, he now believes unfettered spending "could be the curse of our sport".
"It could ruin it. It would be a disaster Click here to find out more! and they'd destroy the sport," he said.
"I would hate to see any kind of takeover happen because it would be badly managed. They can't even run their own teams. They can't agree on anything. If the teams owned it they would destroy it," Ecclestone, 78, added.
He also scoffed at the leaked FOTA calendar, wondering how the body can compete with the structure operated by his businesses.
"We organize the venues which don't cost the teams a penny," said Ecclestone. "I reckon Ferrari and McLaren need us more than we need them."
"All they have to do is pitch up at a track with their sponsors' names all over their cars in exchange for millions of quid and race in front of a worldwide television audience -- which I have set up and keep going."
"The bottom line is they can't afford to set up a rival championship," he added

Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Jerez, Imola, Montreal, Indianapolis, Silverstone, Magny Cours and Adelaide
Sounds like a plan. Buenos Aires sounds cool; Great place to visit. Bernie is scared, has his head up the ass...and is terrified he will lose control of F1. The rest of them sound like great places to visit too.
