PARIS -- Formula One team McLaren has been handed a suspended three-race ban by the World Motor Sport Council for breach of rules at the Australian and Malaysian Grand Prix races.
The World Motor Sport Council says in a statement that the team has admitted to five charges of breaching the International Sporting Code. The council has expressed appreciation for the "open and honest" way in which McLaren conducted itself and recognizes the change in culture at the team.
The council says it has "decided to suspend the application of the penalty it deems appropriate."
The three-race suspension would be applied if McLaren were to be found to have committed a further breach or if new facts came to light.

I think it very much depends on the circumstances. McLaren lied, and it was without doubt, the wrong thing to do, but their reasoning was to be awarded the 3rd place that they should have had anyway. They already lost those points so the suspended ban is in addition to that.
It would have been one hell of a lot less hassle if they had just been honest in the first place I'm glad it is all over. I hope we can get back to a very competitive race season now.

Yes I agree but once again the FIA has picked up on McLaren when other teams or drivers have made or done similar things, its the witch hunt against McLaren that gets stuck in my throat. For instance over theyears Ferrari have pulled some evil deeds but nothing ever happens to them, get my drift :-(

FIA president Max Mosley believes Wednesday’s World Motor Sport Council session has drawn a line under the McLaren lying scandal and will herald a thaw in relations between the governing body and the Woking team.
McLaren escaped with a suspended three-race ban after the WMSC was impressed by the “open and honest” attitude of team boss Martin Whitmarsh at the hearing and his assurances that there had been a culture change within the Woking-based squad.
McLaren has vowed to forge a “closer and more cooperative” relationship with the FIA in future and Mosley thinks that is attainable.
