Yeap, I read that too in AS. I wonder what triggered it. They said FIA found out something new that made LH to be disqualified from the race. I wonder what it is

What the ? So he gave the place back to Trulli as he thought he should - he ends up disqualified. What would have happened if he hadn't handed the place back? Unless all the evidence comes out in the open, this is just crying out for conspiracy theories. Let's make sure that the first 4 cars all had questionable rear wings and also ensure that McLaren is not ahead of Ferrari. I wonder what the results will be if they decide to disqualify the Brawns, Toyotas and Williams

Listening to that the penalty is deserved, to deliberately let a driver pass you and then complain that he passed you is a tad unsporting. To then deny having let him past, when the stewards will have access to recordings of all your conversations is just plain dumb.

Why did it take the FIA so long.....i don't understand.
So as you watch the 20 cars go round the track this weekend just think.......
the world chmpion could be excluded from this years championship. The Brawn, Toyota and Williams teams have possible illegal diffusers. Ferrari and Red Bull may have illegal side pods.
That leaves BMW, Toro Rosso, Force India and 1 McLaren (7 cars out of 20) that don't have disqualification hanging over them....

Why on earth would two inteligent poeple who were trying their best to stay within the rules, including knowing that radio transmissions are recorded AND having sought clarification from Charlie Whiting,Deliberately lie before a stewards enquiry just to gain one place? I am sorry but that does not add up to me something is not right, Let us hear a recording of the stewards enquiry. All these facts should have been known at the circuit and should have been taken into consideration then. ???Mike

Just read the transcript from the stewards on ITV F1 and it seems to me that it is full of ifs and buts! I think its just a case of a rather small person did not want his pet team getting beat from the seasons start by the Mac team

This sort of confusion might once have been resolved straight away with a call to the race director to check the correct running order of the cars. But when McLaren tried this at Spa last year they were incorrectly informed they had not transgressed, and ended up getting penalised
Max Mosley subsequently declared teams should not communicate with the race director on matters like this during the race. This needs to change.
A short message from race control could have informed McLaren and Toyota who was in the right straight away, and cleared up the matter without any fuss. Such calls are commonplace in other racing series, particularly in America, and there is no obvious reason why F1 couldn’t do the same.
Instead we have the same old story of the stewards fiddling with the results after the chequered flag, and F1 spoiling an excellent weekend’s racing by following it with days of needless acrimony.

Here is what one friend thinks of it and I am inclined to agree with it
Trulli slides off. Slides back on then, knowing he cannot pass under safety car, did it anyway. Then, after the usual FIA faffing, he’s penalised 25s and Lewis gets the third that was technically his anyway.
So they’re recalled, despite Toyota giving up (ie declining to press charges) a new meeting is called, McLaren’s flexibility with the truth uncovered and, despite the fact that Trulli had broken the rules, he is reinstated. So instead of just bumping Lewis back to fourth, he is DQed?

Having just now sat and heard the transcript between Lewis and the team I cant see what he did wrong! He asled what to do and did what he was told

From ITV F1 A contrite Lewis Hamilton has apologised for making a “huge mistake” in deliberately misleading the stewards after the Australian Grand Prix.
The world champion was disqualified from the Melbourne results after the stewards found that he and McLaren’s sporting director Dave Ryan had lied to them by denying that Hamilton was instructed to let Jarno Trulli past under the safety car – an exchange of places that initially resulted in Trulli being penalised and Hamilton promoted to third.
McLaren suspended Ryan – a team stalwart since 1974 – on Friday morning, blaming him for leading Hamilton astray.
Speaking to the media on Friday afternoon, Hamilton said he had gone along with Ryan’s version of events at the stewards’ meeting because he had been instructed to withhold information, and apologised for his acquiescence in the cover-up.
“As soon as I got out of the car I did the TV interviews at the back of the garage and straight away I gave a good account of what happened during the race,” he said.
“Straight after that we were requested by the stewards, and whilst waiting for the stewards I was instructed – and misled – by my team manager to withhold information, and that’s what I did.
“I sincerely apologise to the stewards for wasting their time and for making them look silly.
“I’m very, very sorry for the situation – for my team, for Dave, who’s been a good member of the team for many years and whilst I don’t think it was his intention…he’s a good guy.
“When I went into the meeting I had no intention of… I just wanted to tell the story, say what happened.
“I was misled and that’s the way it went.”
Hamilton insisted that while he had made a big misjudgement, it was not in his nature to lie – adding that the episode had “taken a huge toll” on him.
“I would like to say a big sorry to all my fans who have believed in me and supported for me for years,” he said.
“What I’ve been for the last three years is who I am.
“I’m not a liar. I’m not a dishonest person.
“I’m a team player, and every time I’ve been informed to do something, I’ve done it.
“This time I’ve realised that it was a huge mistake, and I’m learning from it.
“It’s taken a huge toll on me.
“I apologise for not speaking to you guys yesterday, but there was a lot to take in and a lot to deal with.
“So I’m here to apologise to everyone and assure you it won’t happen again.”

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh says that suspended sporting director Dave Ryan was responsible for encouraging Lewis Hamilton to mislead the stewards after the Australian Grand Prix.
Yesterday Hamilton was disqualified from third in Melbourne because he and McLaren had not given a truthful account of the team's radio conversations during his exchange of places with Jarno Trulli behind the safety car, and this morning McLaren stalwart Ryan – who had accompanied Hamilton to the stewards' hearing – was suspended from his position and sent home.
"I think Lewis got out of the car and gave a truthful account of what had happened," said Whitmarsh.
"I believe that whilst they were at the stewards, Davey – who had been party to what had happened at Spa (where Hamilton was stripped of his win) – was highly sensitive and in the heat of the moment his judgement was to not give a true account.
"I think Lewis was then led by that."

This just shows the witch hunt against McLaren its disgusting The FIA has confirmed that further action could be taken against McLaren over the Australian Grand Prix controversy.
Yesterday McLaren suspended its veteran sporting director Dave Ryan and Lewis Hamilton made a public apology for misleading the Melbourne stewards over his incident with Jarno Trulli under the safety car.
Hamilton has also been disqualified from his third place in Australia as a result.
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh blamed Ryan for the scandal yesterday, suggesting he had encouraged Hamilton to withhold information from the officials.
An FIA spokesman recognised that Lewis had not instigated the issue, and welcomed his apology, but said it was possible that the matter could be taken further.
"We recognise Lewis's efforts to set the record straight today," the spokesman was quoted as saying by The Times newspaper.
"It would appear that he was put in an impossible position.
"We are now awaiting reports from the FIA observer and stewards before consideration can be given to further investigation of his team's conduct.
"We cannot rule out the matter being referred to the World Council at this stage."

Why dont the FIA and the one of stunted growth be honest with the fans and say the only team we want to win is the red cars.
I think all teams should start up there own circus (as thats what F1vis becoming) and leave the FIA, the FIA could then have Ferrari all to themselves and that would mean if both red cars broke down every race they would still win the championship
