Nick Heidfeld’s future at Renault ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix appears to be in doubt with speculation suggesting that the team may replace him with test driver Bruno Senna.
Both the Daily Telegraph and Autosport are reporting that the German veteran’s future at the Enstone-based outfit is in immediate jeopardy from the Spa race, despite the 34-year-old being chosen to replace Robert Kubica when the Pole was seriously injured in a rallying accident in February.
It is understood that Renault, which is now owned by the investment firm Genii Capital, are looking at the possibility of dropping Heidfeld in favour of test driver Senna in order to give the young Brazilian the final eight races of the season.
Senna, who made his F1 race debut with HRT last season, returned to a Friday practice session at the last event in Hungary in place of Heidfeld but there was no suggestion from the team at the time that further opportunities were definitely to follow.
Former BMW Sauber driver Heidfeld made a strong start to his Renault career when he finished on the podium in his second race for the squad in Malaysia but the team as a whole have suffered a sequence of disappointing results since then.
Heidfeld has scored two more points (34 to 32) than team-mate Vitaly Petrov in the 11 rounds to date, although has suffered several qualifying setbacks in relation to the Russian.
Comments from the team’s management during the course of the season have given the impression that they have not been completely satisfied with the German’s level of performance, particularly over a single lap, and last week owner Gerard Lopez criticised Heidfeld’s leadership of the team.
